Introduction
The main tasks of the coast guard to safeguard sovereignty over the territorial sea, protect shipping safety and combat crimes at sea. The unmanned ship is an important tool of maritime law enforcement to crack down on illegal and criminal activities at sea. IWAVE won an open competitive tender to deliver reliable long range wireless communication devices for unmanned ships of the coast guard.

Background
Unmanned ship is a kind of automatic surface robot that can sail on the surface of the water according to the preset task with the help of precise satellite positioning and self-sensing without remote control. Nowadays, many countries have begun to develop unmanned ship. Some shipping giants are even optimistic: Perhaps only a few decades, the development of mature "ghost ship" technology will rewrite the face of global ocean transportation. In this environment, the problem of tactical wireless data transmission is the primary factor for the development of unmanned ships.
Challenge
The Coast Guard requested that the original speedboat be transformed into an unmanned ship. There are 4 cameras and industrial computer control system installed on the ship. Each camera requires a bit rate of 4Mbps, and the bandwidth of the control system requires 2Mbps. The total bandwidth required is 18Mbps. Unmanned ship has a high requirement for delay. The end to end delay need to within 200 milliseconds, and the furthest distance of an unmanned ship is 5 kilometers.
This task require a high communication system mobility, big data throughput and great networking capability.
Voice, data and video collected by terminals on unmanned ship need to wirelessly transmitted to the command center on shore in real time.
A rugged and durable design is also required to ensure the Nlos Transmitter can be operated safely and continuously in the high humidity, salty and wet working environment.
As part of the modernization program, the Bureau wanted to expand the ship quantity in the future and communication network capacity.
Solution
IWAVE selected a long range IP MIMO communication solution based on 2x2 IP MESH technology. Two 2watts digital ship-mounted Cofdm Ip Mesh radio provides enough data rate and robust wireless communication link for operational and safety requirements.
A 360-degree omnidirectional antenna was installed on the unmanned ship so that no matter which direction the ship move towards, the video feed and control data on can be transmitted to the receiving end on the shore.
The IP Video receiver on the shore is equipped with a large-angle antenna to receive both video and control data from the unmanned ship.
And the real time video can be transmitted to the general command center through the network. So that the general command center can remotely view the ship’s movement and video.
Benefits
The Bureau of Coast Guard now has access to a complete video and control data transmission system for unmanned ships video recording, management, and dispatch, which has enhanced information gathering, as well as improving response times and safety levels.
The cost guard head office can now monitor actual scenarios in real-time thanks to the live video streaming capability of IWAVE High Bandwidth Communication Links, thereby greatly increasing situational awareness and improving the speed and quality of decision making.
The cost guard now can increase the number of the unmanned ship with IP mesh node FD-6702TD to expand the communication network.
