Introduction
IWAVE IP MESH link expanded the communication range of robot dogs from 50meters to 2.8km.
Robot dogs, or four-legged robots, are a type of legged robot. It is similar in shape to a tetrapod and can walk autonomously. It can walk in different geographical environments, complete a variety of complex movements, and can use leg motion controllers to cross some extreme environments that humans cannot reach. The full development of robot dogs requires the coordination of hardware, software and movement behavior.
Among them the wireless data connection to be established between it and the remote operator is a very important part. The distance and stability of communication data link greatly affect the practicality of robot dogs.

Background
A border defence team is currently experimenting with a range of unmanned combat vehicles, drones and robotic dogs. These unmanned and intelligent equipment can work in dangerous fields that are inaccessible to humans. Their intelligent robotic arms can be remotely controlled by engineers to perform dangerous tasks in place of humans.
IWAVE IP MESH link was chosen to ensure the stable and long distance wireless communication link between a robot dog and its operator.
Challenge
The figure below shows the robot dog application. During the practical working, the robot dog will climb the hill. Operator C will remotely control the robot dog and monitoring the real time video streaming captured by camera on robot dog. There are also many stones and tress along the hillside. So the communication is none line of sight. Place A is a ditch. When the robot dog reached A place, the wireless signal was blocked by B.
The second challenge was to guarantee the Operator C not only get the real time video streaming but also control the robot dog via the IP MESH link for a long range. At present, the robot dog already equipped a wireless link based on wifi technology. But its communication range is only 50meters LOS.
The working environment of the robot dog is altitude environment. So the military require a rugged and durable wireless units able to operate safely and continuously in the hostile weather and low temperature place.
The military also require the solution has strong anti-interference. Around the robot dog and operator there are many other different frequency band radio. So the IP MESH solution need to has the ability to anti-jamming.
Solution
For Robot dog, IWAVE provides the FD-6100 IP module. This digital data link provides a robust and secure data link in three software-selectable frequency bands 800Mhz, 1.4Ghz and 2.4Ghz. The compact miniature, lightweight and robust design of the FD-6100, make it the ideal candidate for robot, UAV and ground vehicles which are sensitive to size and weight.
2.For operator C, IWAVE provides FD-6700WG IP MESH Handheld type. Besides the video streaming and control data, it also provides wifi function. In this way, the operator can access the IP MESH network via wifi. And get the living and control the robot dog via the MESH link for long range.
For point B, put a FD-6700WG on point B, when robot dog reach Point A. That FD-6700WG will repeat the signal to operator. In this way, the wireless link will be continuous and stable even though the robot dop walk in the ditch.
All the IWAVE tactical IP MESH radio were equipped with dual-band antennas-800Mhz+1.4Ghz. During application, if 800Mhz is interrupted, it will automatically hop to 1.4G to keep the stable communication.
Benefits
The military is using IWAVE IP MESH digital communication solution in many different situations with robot dog to carry out different dangerous task. Now this system enable the robot dog freely walk for 2.8km max in the complex environment.
With dual-band antenna, the robot has more strong anti-jamming ability and the operator get a stable video streaming and control the robot dog in a long range.
