Introduction

IWAVE PTT MESH radio enables firefighters to easily keep connected during a fire fighting event in Hunan province.

The PTT (Push-To-Talk) Bodyworn narrowband MESH is our latest product radios provide instant push-to-talk communications, including private one-to-one calling, one-to-many group calling, all calling, and emergency calling.

For the underground and indoor special environment, through the network topology of chain relay and MESH network, the wireless multi-hop network can be rapidly deployed and constructed, which effectively solves the problem of wireless signal occlusion and realizes the wireless communication between ground and underground, indoor and outdoor command center.

Background

On the afternoon of September 16, 2022, a fire broke out in the China Telecom Building in Hunan Province. The Lotus Garden China Telecom Building was the first building in Changsha to exceed 200 meters with a height of 218 meters.

It was also known as the tallest building in Hunan at the time. It is still one of Changsha’s landmark buildings with a building height of 218 meters, 42 floors above ground and 2 floors underground.

Challenge

rapid deployment portable repeater

During the fire-fighting process, when firefighters entered the building to search and rescue, conventional DMR radios and cellular network radios were unable to achieve command and communication because there were too many blind spots and obstructions inside the building.

Time is life. The whole communication system need be built up within a short time. So there is no enough time to find suitable place to put repeater. All the radios must be one-button to work and automatically communicate with each to set up the mesh radio network to cover the whole building from -2F to 42F.

The other requirement for the communication system was that it needed to be able to interconnect the on-site command center during the fire fighting event. There is a fire fighting truck near the telecom building work as a command center to coordinate all the rescue members efforts.

Solution

In an emergency, the communication support team quickly turn on a IWAVE handset narrowband MESH radio base station with high antenna on the 1F of the telecom building. At same time, the second unit TS1 was also deployed on the entrance of the -2F.

Then the 2units TS1 base station radios immediately connected with each other to build a big communication network covering the whole building.

Fire fighters carry the TS1 base stations and T4 handset radios inside the building. Both T1 and T4 automatically join the adhoc voice communication network and expand the network to anywhere inside the building.

With IWAVE tactical manet radio system, the voice communication network covered the whole building from -2F to 42F and on-site command vehicle and then the voice signal was remotely transmitted to the general command center.

Benefits

During the rescue process, underground buildings, tunnels and large-span buildings usually have large communication blind spots. This makes rescue more difficult. For tactical rescue teams, smooth and reliable communication is essential. IWAVE's MANET system is based on narrowband ad hoc networking technology, and all devices have the functional characteristics of rapid deployment and multi-hop cascading.

Whether it is a city with tall buildings, indoor buildings or underground tracks, IWAVE's MANET radios can quickly set up an emergency communication network according to local conditions and achieve on-site network coverage as soon as possible. Extending signal coverage is a necessary condition to ensure that rescuers can successfully handle accidents and perform difficult tasks.
